How to use a nasal aspirator on your baby

When your baby has a stuffy or blocked nose, they can't clear it like adults do with a tissue. Unfortunately, nasal congestion often leads to discomfort, making it harder for babies to sleep or eat and sometimes even causing ear infections. That's why staying on top of your baby's nasal care is important. But how can you help your baby breathe easier? A nasal aspirator is the answer.

What is a nasal aspirator?

Nasal aspirators are designed to relieve babies' congestion by clearing mucus from their noses. They do this by using suction to extract the blockage from baby's noses, this is why they’re often known as snot suckers.

There are multiple types of natal aspirators, some electric, and some manual. Here at Dr Talbot’s, we have three nasal aspirators: Silicone Nasal Aspirator Bulb with Case, Breathe-Eez Nasal Aspirator and Electric Nasal Aspirator with 2-Pack Nose & Ear Cleaners. Each has a different suction method so you can choose your preferred method.

When to use a nasal aspirator?

You should use a nasal aspirator on your baby whenever they have a stuffy nose. If they’re going through a period of being congested, using the nasal aspirator before feed and bedtime can help relieve them and allow them to feed and sleep more comfortably.

How to use a nasal aspirator?

Depending on the type of nasal aspirator you have there are different ways to use them. Below we break down how to use a bulb nasal aspirator, a mouth-suction nasal aspirator and an electric suction nasal aspirator. Bulb nasal aspirator:

  • Place the nozzle at the opening of a baby’s nostril.
  • Gently squeeze the bulb to release the pressure on the bulb which will gently suction the mucus from your baby's nose.

Mouth suction nasal aspirator:

  • Place the nose piece at the opening of a baby’s nostril.
  • Gently suck on the opposite end to remove any blockages.

Electric nasal aspirator:

  • Place the nasal tip at the opening of a baby’s nostril.
